Trang An lies on the southern edge of the Red River Delta in Ninh Binh province: limestone peaks threaded with partly flooded valleys and ringed by near-vertical cliffs. It is the only mixed property among ASEAN's 51, recognised for both natural and cultural value.
History
History
Excavations in caves at different heights have revealed more than 30,000 years of continuous human activity, as hunter-gatherers adapted to climate change, including the sea flooding the landscape after the last ice age. In the 10th and 11th centuries, Hoa Lu, an ancient capital of Viet Nam, was strategically established here.

Temples, pagodas, rice fields and small villages still lie within the property. For us, Trang An tells the story of people and landscape as fully as anywhere: from caves that sheltered hunters to mountains that became a royal court's natural fortress.
