The Lenggong Valley in Perak has four archaeological sites in two clusters. UNESCO notes they span close to two million years, one of the longest records of early humans in a single locality and the oldest outside Africa.

History

History

The valley has open-air and cave sites, including Palaeolithic stone-tool workshops, evidence of early technology. So many sites in a small area suggest a fairly large, semi-settled population, with cultural remains from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Metal ages.

Among the most famous finds is the skeleton known as Perak Man, buried in a cave with grave goods. For us, such careful burial shows that people in this region held beliefs and cared for one another long before history was written.

The Lenggong Archaeological Museum lets students and visitors explore these stories, while valley communities still live rural lives among the same limestone hills and rivers their earliest predecessors knew.
