Ujung Kulon lies at the far south-western tip of Java, covering the Ujung Kulon peninsula, offshore islands and the Krakatoa nature reserve. UNESCO notes it holds the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest on the Java plain.

History

History

The 1883 eruption of Krakatau and the tsunami that followed devastated this coast, and the forest grew back afterwards. The area is valuable both for its geology and as a natural laboratory of ecosystem recovery.
