The property includes the mining site and company town at Sawahlunto, coal storage at the port of Emmahaven, and the railway linking mines to coast. It was built as one integrated system to extract, process, transport and ship high-quality coal from a remote part of Sumatra.

History

History

The Netherlands East Indies government developed the site from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Workers came from the local Minangkabau, from Javanese and Chinese contract labour, and from convicts brought from Dutch-controlled areas. UNESCO calls it outstanding testimony to the fusion of local knowledge with European technology.
